Clark, our film plant

Our Clark film plant was patterned after  duPont factory.        Du Pont was till then dominant in graphic arts film market with their quick developing characteristics.        The market was, however,
changing at the time of Clark facility construction. ( or modification as the building was already there.)  Instead of hand/tray development,  automatic film processors are increasingly installed.       Both Kodak and Fuji Film adopted slower initial development speed in favor of consistent overall quality.      Our R&D effort in early 80's centered around realigning base technology to more stable Kodak type emulsion as well as emerging high quality rapid access type film.       Now after 30 years, all these memories are blurred and even the film itself disappeared in favor of the digital technology.       Clark facility was closed soon after the joint venture with Kodak in 1998 and the facility reverted back to a commercial rental property.         I have looked and looked but found only this photo of Clark / Clark Tech Center.        Mr. Mizuno, from Process Shizai , is shown posing in front.

Avranche, France

Avranche factory, former Quadri Metal, plant came to Polychrome from Rhone Poulanc when they divested their Regma, graphic arts dealer organization then handling Polychrome plates.      Thomas Bittner who was then running Polychrome Europe saw both an opportunity in buying the package and at the same time the threat if we did not buy and Regma went to a competitor.        Polychrome was then producing Copperkote, bimetallic long running plate, and was familiar with the type of market Quadirmetal served.       Gene Golda and I were invited to visit Avarnche factory and were happy to see their capability of producing real big plates which our plant in Newark could not produce.       We were fortunate to have had the factory as it turned out the line could be modified to produce CTX with minimum investment.        Since the multimetal business was dying due to the trend in shorter runs, Avanche factory committed to making CTX.     They worked tirelessly with Osterode from where the base positive plates came, Clark and Soest film plant from where the silver halide emulsion came and with Corporate R&D  in Carlstadt to make the product.      The CTX name was coined by Bob Hallman to signify and promote cooperation across the R&D organization and plants.    As it turned out  everyone's cooperation really made CTX production successful.      Unfortunately I found only one picture (so far) from the many Avranche visits I made.

WRN; ground breaking in two front.

Did you know that US postage stamps used to be printed not by the offset but by gravure and other printing methods?         This all changed around 1980 when change over to offset finally reached the government printing office.       Till then offset plates runs were only to a medium run length and not to the required long length run.          Our WRN was designed to combine tested and proven diazo system and a long running photopolymer system.       This 50 states bird stamps were the first demonstration of WRN to be used for the postage stamp application.        In this sense WRN plates were ground breaking for the industry as well as for Polychrome.      We continued advancing diazo and photopolymer hybrid technology as our core technology and the WRN was the first in this regard.
